BTEC-Cisco Routing, Switching & Virtual LANs

    Assessment and Grading

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be by means of a activities, case studies, tests and assignment work collected into a portfolio of work. The class activities and assignments are designed to cover the grading criteria for the unit.

This means that you should attend all classes unless you have a VALID reason for not attending.

How will I be graded?
Pass

To achieve a pass you must set up classless routing using appropriate routing protocols with the goal of conserving IP addresses. You should be able to configure distance vector and link state routing protocols such as RIP and EIGRP. You should be able to configure newer and older routing protocols to work together for example RIPv1 and RIPv2. You should be able to configure OSPF. You will need a good grasp of switching and VLANs. This should be demonstrated by the use of the spanning tree protocol, setting up VLANs and VLAN routing and setting up the virtual trunking protocol. You must develop a good grasp of networking terminology and concepts.

Merit

To achieve a merit you must be able to compare distance vector and link state routing protocols, demonstrate an understanding of the technical workings and security advantages of VLANs and be able to demonstrate and understanding of the spanning tree protocol. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the optimisation of VLANs and VLAN routing. You should also have the troubleshooting skills to fix routing and VLAN problems.

Distinction

To achieve a distinction you will be able to design, document and evaluate an efficient addressing scheme using VLSM. You will be able to design, document and evaluate a network involving routing, switching and security based on VLANs. You will have an excellent grasp of the technical language used in the field of networking and will be able to make appropriate use of the terminology in your documentation.

Grading Criteria

The table below shows the grading criteria.  A printer friendly version is available

Grading Criteria
To achieve a pass your work must show:

P3. use command line or web based management
tools to configure routers and switches

P4. carry out routine switch management tasks such as configuring, saving, backing up and restoring a switch configuration.
